Enugu, October 26, 2026 — Online Media Professionals (OPM), a newly established association, has announced its emergence with a commitment to uniting online media practitioners, protecting their professional interests and strengthening the role of digital publications in Nigeria’s media landscape.

The association, according to a communiqué issued by its Communiqué Drafting Committee, seeks to provide a common platform for online media professionals to collaborate, exchange ideas and address challenges affecting their practice and welfare.

The emergence of OPM comes amid the growing influence of online publications in informing the public, shaping public discourse and holding public officeholders accountable.

The association said there was a need for practitioners to organise under a recognised professional body to strengthen their collective voice, promote responsible journalism and contribute to the development of Nigeria’s media industry.

OPM is expected to bring together individuals who own or work with online media publication platforms, creating opportunities for professional development, cooperation and constructive engagement with relevant stakeholders.

The association also plans to establish relationships with government officials, security agencies, educational institutions, corporate organisations and other institutions whose activities affect the media and society.

According to the communiqué, such engagements would create opportunities for dialogue, collaboration and improved understanding of the role of online media practitioners.

Although the association is beginning its activities in the South-East, it has expressed the ambition of expanding into a national organisation representing online media professionals across Nigeria.

Its long-term vision is to build a credible professional body that provides members with a common voice, promotes accountability and addresses issues affecting their working conditions, professional interests and welfare.

The association also emphasised that the growth of online media must be accompanied by professionalism, accountability and respect for the responsibilities associated with informing the public.

It said it would encourage cooperation among practitioners and promote standards capable of strengthening public confidence in online publications.

OPM further acknowledged that the success of the initiative would depend on members’ commitment, a clear sense of purpose and programmes designed to address their needs.

Membership is open to professionals who own or work with online media publication platforms and are willing to support the association’s objectives.

The association consequently called on online media practitioners across the South-East and other parts of the country to identify with the initiative and participate in building a stronger professional platform.
