The Lagos State High Court in Ikeja has declared Mudashiru Obasa’s removal as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly “illegal, unconstitutional, null and void”.

In the judgment delivered on Wednesday, Justice Yetunde Pinheiro also “nullified the proceedings and resolutions of the House held on January 13, 2025, during which Obasa was ousted”.

Obasa had challenged his removal in court, naming the House of Assembly and Mojisola Meranda, who was appointed as the new Speaker, as defendants. Through his counsel, Chief Afolabi Fashanu, Obasa argued that “36 lawmakers carried out the decision during the Assembly’s recess while he was outside the country”. He claimed the session was invalid, as it “lacked his authorisation or a formal delegation of power, contravening the Assembly’s established rules”.

His suit was based on nine grounds, referencing relevant sections of the amended 1999 Constitution and the Standing Orders of the Lagos State House of Assembly.
