The Abia State Government has paid a counterpart fund of N3.5 billion as a requirement for upgrading roads and setting up agro logistics hubs in about 10 LGAs of the state under the Rural Access and Agricultural Marketing Programme.
The Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, disclosed this in Government House, Umuahia, on Monday, while briefing journalists on the outcome of this week’s expanded State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti.
He said the projects are expected to commence across the benefiting LGAs soon.
“So the state has paid its own counterpart funds, and we expect that with a similar action from the World Bank, that project will kick off around the state,” Kanu said.
Kanu noted that in line with the announcement made by the governor during the interdenominational thanksgiving service on project commissioning, the governor will commission one out of the 20 Smart Schools already completed in Umuahia on Tuesday, May 27.
The Information Commissioner also announced that the governor signed into law 18 executive bills recently passed by the 8th Abia State House of Assembly.
According to him, the newly signed 18 bills brought to 30 the total number of executive bills introduced and signed into law by the administration of Governor Alex Otti.
He said, “This landmark achievement seeks to institutionalise the reforms and transformations that have so far taken place in Abia State.”
He noted that the two years of administration under Otti have been full of monumental achievements, as can be felt and touched by all and sundry, assuring that greater strides lie ahead.
He added that in light of the second anniversary celebrations, more activities have been lined up for the rest of the week, and they will be held in the next couple of days, starting from Tuesday, May 27, 2025.
He announced the remaining activities for the 2-year anniversary of the governor to include the Children’s Day celebration on Tuesday 27th and the visit of the First Lady to destitute homes and orphanages. On Wednesday, May 28, would be a public lecture to be delivered by Dr Kalu Idika Kalu, former Minister for Finance of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
He continued by informing that on Thursday, May 29, the governor would present his traditional state broadcast, which would be followed by a grand finale parade and later in that evening, a special state banquet, while on Friday, May 30, there will be a novelty football match involving the executive and legislative arms of government.
Contributing, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Ikechukwu Uwanna, said that the laws signed would transform the landscape of governance in the state, adding that they underscore the government’s commitment to institutionalising the reforms and changes being brought into governance.
“However, it’s important to note that these bills underscore His Excellency’s commitment to institutionalising the reforms and changes that he’s bringing together in governance in the state.
