Babachir Lawal, ex-SGF and CPC founding member, has asserted that the coalition aiming to unseat President Tinubu in 2027 does not require former President Buhari’s endorsement. Lawal accused both Tinubu loyalists and former CPC chieftains of “chasing shadows,” emphasizing the movement’s dedication to the “Talakawas”—Nigeria’s poor.
He said, “If you are an original CPC person, it will pain you. It will push you into action involuntarily to change this type of system that is out to destroy and marginalise the underprivileged in society. That is what Buhari stands for. That is who we are and what we learned from him.”
Lawal dismissed suggestions that Buhari had sanctioned the coalition, stressing their independence: “Even if Buhari says, hey, gentlemen, I will join you. It is our responsibility to say, No, Oga please keep off. You are too big for us.”
He also criticized former CPC members who remain with the APC, suggesting their loyalty is driven by personal gain rather than ideology.
