Manchester United head coach Rúben Amorim has played down talk of momentum despite overseeing what many considered the side’s best performance of the season in a 2-0 win over Sunderland.
First-half goals from Mason Mount and Benjamin Šeško were enough to seal a comfortable victory at Old Trafford, lifting United into the top half of the Premier League table and offering some brief respite ahead of the international break.
According to BBC Sports on Saturday, Amorim, when asked whether it was a shame his side could not build on the momentum such a victory may bring, replied: “There is no momentum with our team. We know what happens when we win one game. For me, the frustration is not seeing the same team at home and away.
“You saw today, we didn’t play well in the second half. But we were focused, we fought the second balls. Ben [Sesko] was there to touch them all the time. So these small things are going to help us win games.
“And sometimes you have your moments. In the first half, we had a lot of moments. But then in the second half, if we cannot play well, they will not play well. And that is the way a big team plays during the season. So that is the big frustration.”
United entered the match under pressure after a string of inconsistent performances, but Amorim insisted that one result, no matter how convincing, would not change the larger concerns he holds about his squad’s mental and tactical consistency.
