The Anambra State governor, Chukwuma Soludo, on Saturday, cast his vote in the ongoing senatorial bye-elections for the Anambra South Senatorial District, at his polling unit, Ofiyi Square, 002, Isuofia in Aguata Local Government Area of the state.
While speaking with journalists after voting, Soludo hailed the Independent National Electoral Commission for its preparedness to ensure the success of the election.
The governor said that he was impressed that electoral materials arrived early.
Soludo explained, “I have just exercised my franchise. I am quite impressed with the conduct of the election. There is also an impressive turnout. Everybody is going about voting peacefully.
“I want to thank INEC for being on top of their game as usual. Basically, everything is going well. No rancour, no fighting.”
The governor also accused the All Progressives Congress governorship candidate of beating the Commissioner for Environment, Felix Odimegwu, with thugs in Ezinifite in Nnewi South Local Government Area.
Soludo said the information was one of the feedbacks he got from the field, while describing the incident as “unfortunate”, adding, “why would someone leave his polling unit to other people’s polling unit, he should let the will of the people to be allowed to prevail.”
Our correspondent, who monitored the election, reported that the turnout in the area was impressive, while security officials were sighted at strategic locations in order to ensure a peaceful election.
Officials of the Nigerian Army, police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and FRSC mounted the major roads to enforce the restriction order on movement.
Also, security officials were stationed at each polling unit to maintain law and order, while the electoral process so far had been peaceful across the various polling units visited.
The bye-election is conducted for the seat of the Anambra South Senatorial district, left vacant as a result of the death of Senator Ifeanyi Ubah in 2024.
