The Nigerian Super Falcons have extended their sympathy and wishes for a swift recovery to South African Banyana Banyana midfielder Gabriela Salgado, who sustained a serious injury during Tuesday’s Women’s Africa Cup of Nations semi-final match.
The incident, which saw Salgado stretchered off the pitch, cast a shadow over Nigeria’s hard-fought 2-1 victory.
Super Falcons, on their official X page on Wednesday, emphasised that the spirit of competition takes a backseat in moments of such distress.
A portion of the statement read, “The entire Super Falcons of Nigeria family, from players and coaches to staff, were profoundly saddened to learn of the serious injury sustained by Gabriela Salgado during yesterday’s match.
“Our immediate thoughts are solely with her for comfort, care, and the recovery journey ahead.”
Salgado’s injury occurred late in the second half of the semi-final clash, a moment that visibly impacted players from both sides.
Early reports indicate she suffered a fractured mid-shaft in her left leg and underwent successful surgery on Wednesday.
She is expected to be sidelined for the remainder of the year.
