The Medical and Dental Consultants’ Association of Nigeria, University of Uyo Teaching Hospital Chapter, has officially announced the suspension of its strike effective from Thursday, July 10, 2025.
The decision to suspend the strike was reached during an Extraordinary General Meeting of the association held on July 9, 2025, according to a statement by its chairman, Dr Ibiok Usendiah and Secretary, Dr. Solomon Bassey, issued in Uyo on Sunday.
The association on June 26, 2025, declared an indefinite strike over the exclusion of the medical professionals from the advertisements for the position of the VC to replace incumbent VC, Professor Nyaudo Ndaeyo, who is due to exit the stage by December this year.
However, the association said, though one of its demands has yet to be resolved, there was a compelling need to suspend the strike following heartfelt appeals from students, whom it described as their “children, mentees, and younger colleagues”
The statement read, “The strike, which began on June 26, 2025, was declared in protest against the exclusion of clinical lecturers from eligibility to contest for the office of Vice Chancellor at the University of Uyo due to the non-recognition of the postgraduate medical fellowship as an equivalent to the PhD.
”In a significant development, the University has now published an addendum acknowledging and accepting the postgraduate medical fellowship as a valid qualification for clinical lecturers vying for the Vice Chancellor position.
”While the second issue of an apology by the university pro-chancellor remains unresolved, the association cited heartfelt appeals from students, whom they described as their “children, mentees, and younger colleagues” – as a compelling reason for the gracious decision to return to work.
“Clinical lecturers are expected to resume full academic duties across the University starting Thursday, July 10, 2025.”
