Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has disclosed that the National Sports Festival has continued to serve as a beacon of national unity over the years, rebuilding the bonds of peace and mutual respect after the damage of the country’s civil war fought between 1967 and 1970.
Obasanjo said that NSF has continued to bring people of diverse tribes across the country together, foster friendships across cultural divides and prepare athletes for future challenges.
The former President also hailed the athletes’ resilience, courage, discipline, show of love and determination, which have always motivated them to give a good account of themselves while representing their various states.
Obasanjo, according to a statement issued by his Special Assistant on Media, Kehinde Akinyemi, spoke on Tuesday in his welcome address for the sporting contingents from the 36 states of the Federation and the FCT entitled, “A Triumph Of The Spirit”
The former President said, “As we gather in Abeokuta for the 22nd National Sports Festival, let us reflect on the essence of these Games.
“Since its inception in Lagos in 1973, the festival has been more than a competition. It has served as a beacon of unity, rebuilding the bonds of peace and mutual respect after the Civil War.
“Today, it continues to bring people together, fostering friendships across cultural divides and preparing athletes for future challenges. But the true spirit of these Games lies beyond medals or state rankings. It is found in courage, perseverance, and the joy of participation.”
He emphasised that the thrill of competition is not about the scoreboard but about embracing the love of sport itself.
Obasanjo submitted, “The sacrifice, determination, and grit—the qualities that brought each of you here—are victories in their own right.
“For some, the journey to compete may not lead to a podium finish, but the effort and resilience shown are monumental achievements.
“These Gateway Games celebrate that indomitable spirit, the drive to push through pain, overcome obstacles, and pursue excellence.”
He explained further that people find a unique connection that transcends politics and language barriers in sports.
The former President encouraged the participants to embrace the camaraderie, build lasting relationships, and enjoy the sporting celebration of pluralism and peace.
“May these Games bring joy, unity, and the triumph of the human spirit,” Obasanjo declared as he welcomed the participating athletes to Ogun State.
